2013 might has come and gone but some songs will remain in how memories. mind and dear to our heart forever. A lot of list seen shows the list of hit songs of known and already made artistes. I’ve decided to go far from that cause there were some songs done by upcoming artist that made us dance, feel good, cry, laugh, reminded us of loved ones and more. Its not easy trying to get into that very busy Nigerian music industry. This list was compiled so that we can celebrated this talented individuals who have paved way for themselves and to bring more exposure to those new or existing record labels who are looking to sign a new artiste.
20. Damsel HRH – Naija Gyrate.
Damsel HRH kicks off with something different, The “Acumba” crooner switched things up a little with the Gyrate flavour that made Tony One-Week popular back in the day as an artiste. Damsel made it her own singing in all major language in Naija to make us all Gyrate. The song definitely will blow if it gets more push and a video. Nigerian students will love this song and also people that love the “Palmwine” song. Damsel will make you dance from the first beat of the song to the last second in the song and make you ask for more. If you’re a new record label or a ready-made label and need or intend to sign a female artiste with a unique style. Damsel is the female Burnaboy! Go for her!
19. Cliff Nino – All Because Of Love (Remix) ft. Raquel
Cliff Nino is a Ghana based, Nigerian artiste who released 3 singles last year but this feel good song with Ghanaian songstress, Raquel got me going crazy. Cliff seem to have the original of “All Because Of Love” but the remix got me wanting more from him. Raquel also did justice to the song. My Ghanaian friends say “All Because Of Love” remix brought Raquel back to Ghanaian music scene again. The song is well written and composed, which got it a lot of airplay on radio stations both in Ghana and Nigeria. If you’re a record label in Ghana trying to tap into the Nigerian market, Cliff Nino is your man.
18. Pryse – Eleto
I wonder why Pryse is still an upcoming artiste, I guess Chocolate City records needs to be blame for this. Pryse is so super talented; i actually think she is not getting a lot of attention cause Choc City pays more attention on other artiste. “Eleto” is one of the official singles she dropped last year and the song picked up more as soon as the video dropped. They don’t call her the punchline queen for nothing people – Listen to “Eleto” and get a feel of her or her “POundcake Vs New Slaves” freestyle. She got me asking for more with that freestyle. Pryse takes the number 18 spot and hopefully Choc City will pay attention to her so she can get off the upcoming artiste list.
17. Shaydee – O Poju
EME’s Shaydee finds himself on the 17 spot with his official single “O Poju”. With the kind of voice Shaydee has, a lot of people thought by now he should have more than one official single. More than 3 freestyle of Shaydee got released and a couple of collabos. Shaydee got that special voice even Ice Prince had to call for his services on his “I Swear” track. Even with all the tracks Shaydee was in 2013 he still remains an upcoming artiste but has a platform to elevate if focused on and hopefully Banky W and his EME team will get to work.
16. Butta-Someboi – Princess Of The World ft. Yung & Kunem
I’ve heard a lot of beat but the beat to Butta-SomeBoi’s “Princess Of The World” stands out with the snare in the beat giving me a lot of joy. You can hear Reggae fused with hiphop blending so good you won’t believe your ears plus Yung and Kunem did justice to beat. The Hook – “She the princess of me world so me call her diana,.. you the one on me mind every minute and hour amma take you around the world just holla”. These boys all represent J-Town. Butta-Someboi, Yung and Kunem Slizzle are all based in Jos and they repping well. Looking to expand your record label – Feel free to grab them. Same Jos P-Square, 2face, M.I Abaga, Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz all repp’ed at one time of their career.
15. XP – Calabar Loni Shan (Remix) ft. Skales, Reminisce & Olamide.
Edge record’s XP released the remix to his “Calabar Loni Shan” in January of 2013 and the streets fell in-love with the star studded remix which had Skales, Olamide and fellow Edge records artiste, Reminisce on it. XP hasn’t made any impact since then but “Calabar Loni Shan” is a hiphop street tune and i think Edge records needs to either release more hit songs from XP cause of his unique style of hiphop is strictly for the streets. oti Ye e!
14. Wale Stringz – Closer
As his name says, Wale Stringz, you’d want to hear a lot of fresh instrumentals in every song he drops. “Closer” is one of the songs he dropped in 2013 that made me fall in love with his tune. A song produced by an upcoming producer called Dimz. Written and Composed by Wale Stringz and Dimz they talk about a relationship that went sour. A feel good song that can be increased to a dance track, talk about a song that is diversified. Wale Stringz also has this style that separates him from his pair. Looking to sign an artiste who has managed to crave space for himself in the music industry – connect Wale Stringz!
13. Ayoola – Ochanya ft. Phyno
Project Fame winner, Ayoola find himself on the no. 13 spot with “Ochanya” which features Phyno and was produced by Five Star in house producer, Del B. I think Ayoola still doesn’t know the pattern or better said genre of music he wants to concentrate on. He should stop trying to fit in and stop testing waters, you’ve done all that in the PF house. Go back to that fuji feel that’s in your voice and express yourself better. A lot of people fell in love with that side of you and it is still commercial if thats what you trying to consider. His management and CAPital should do something before he remains an upcoming artiste for too long, the same way you guys helped Chidinma find her way and now she is more versatile. illbliss and tha suspect get to work on Ayoola if he is still signed to y’all.
12. Bular – Tonight
When i heard this song for the first time i thought it was a 2face’s song cause i wasn’t really listening i was dancing. The way producer, Black Jerzey made pop feel like Nigerians create it, is still shocking to me. Bular is another artiste trying to find his foot in the industry, mixing music and school ain’t easy believe me. He will be finishing this year and will be releasing more tracks produced by Blaq Jerzey. Listen to Bular’s Tonight and you’ll be amazed by how talented he is and as for Blaq Jerzey he just confirms that he is a beast.
11. Shazz – Saurayi
Shazz won my heart with this song, I don’t understand most of the things he said in Hausa but the way he mixed it with english i could relate. DJ Klem who is igbo produced a beat that any person from the north will relate to and get dancing – Talent! God bless you for this beat. Shazz rapped and did the chorus himself. “Saurayi” is a love song that expresses the way every young guy feels for their first love in college.
Are you planning to tap into the big market in the north and you need a rapper who can get you that market and still not losing the Lagos market, you need to contact Shazz. His other single “Kauna” is what i call Nigeria’s northern pop. Shazz is a talented young hiphop artiste with the right push, he will take over the market.
10. Rukus – The List
That “Yum” rapper, Rukus is on this list because he is an underground rapper both in Nigeria and U.S – I hope eLDee plans to change his status soon. Rukus is the second Trybe Records 2.0 on this list. His song “The List” created a buzz and stirred up a lot of controversy in the industry with Ice Prince taking the shots in the song personal and reacted to it – Ice needs to chill though. Rukus took hits at everybody on the Notjustok most talented rapper’s list and now that he is on our list, I hope he is ready to recieve shots. Lmao! Just saying! Anyways, Rukus released a couple of freestyles in 2013 but “The List” puts him on no. 10 on our list.
9. Charass – Gbege
Mikel Obi’s Matured Money Music record label signed a couple of new artists last year and they launched themselves into the industry with their hit single “Bunka”. Charass got my attention from the “Bunka” song and when he went solo still under MMM he completely blew my mind. “Gbege” is a song produced by ace producer, Tee-Y Mix. Charass is definitely going to be leading the team at MMM and he has got the writing and composing skills to lead the pack. His afro-Highlife style just blends in the Nigerian market. He might not be getting all the attention he deserves in the industry because he is an upcoming artiste but 2014 holds a new story for the MMM artiste. A lot of ground work still needs to be done by the team at MMM records. The video for “Gbege” was well scripted and the concept tells all the story well. Charass also released another official single “Coco Butter” produced by Del B but there is something about the “Gbege” song, I think its the originality in the production by Tee-Y mix who we don’t get to hear all the time because of his class and worth. With more promotion and push Charass has got the talent, the rest lies on the MMM records team to go all out to make him (Charass) a success.
8. Gee 4 – U Turn Me On ft. Skales
Gee 4 got a lot of attention with his “U Turn Me On” single which had EME’s Skales on it. The Jay Pizzle produced tune is a song for the dance floor. Gee 4′s unique style paved way for him – that voice of his has that naija ragga ragga style and with Skales on the hook it definitely had to blow. Gee 4 followed up with a cripsy video and before i can say “Gee” – all music video stations were playing his video constantly and the deejays in the club slam it everytime. I love the jam and Gee 4 might not know but the song did set new standards for dancehall upcoming artists.
7. SK Boys – Personally
SK Boys!!! These boys should be arrested for doing covers for songs and making it feel like theirs is the original. Their cover for “Personally” was accepted as the official street remix for P-Square’s Personally. The song was so big that they had to shoot a video for it – and boy, the video was X-rated. Their recent work, the cover for Wizkid – Starboy’s “Caro” is currently receiving massive airplay on the streets with fans loving their cover for every song. Sk boys’ “Personally” got them more shows than some of the known upcoming artiste on this list, that shows you how big their personally cover got. With the right label and the right push they will write their own songs and be a force in the industry in no time.
6. Q-Dot – Alomo Meta
Q-Dot Alagbe is another unique indigenious artist with a style i termed “Spriritual” – His Alomo Meta (Orin Emi) got the streets buzzing like i have never seen. I heard this song in November, 2012 – I loved the fact that he was unique and his style was different but the way it was quickly accepted when it dropped officially in 2013 is still shocking, that he(Q-Dot) was forced to shoot a classic video for the hit single. I guess that makes his song “Spiritual” – His genre of music doesn’t allow you to hit the dance floor like any other song, but that spiritual feeling he has in the song gets people grouping up in twos, fours and groups to clap and dance the song like a deliverance service is going on in a church. Do you doubt the street credibility of this song, tell any deejay to slam it and see the crowd go wild like they’ve been drunk for ages. With a good platform, Q-dot will definitely hit it big in the music industry – New record label who are looking to make a name for themselves should sign him up.
5. Yung L – SOS
Yung L finds himself on the 5th spot of the top 20 songs that made 2013 by upcoming artiste. His song “SOS” produced by Chopstix is another classic from the self acclaimed Mr. Marley. The “Fever” crooner is gently finding his way to the heart of fans across the nation. The video for the song also was well crafted by ace video director, Clarence Peters. With more hits, Yung L will be propelled from being an upcoming to next rated. Keep dem hits coming Mr. Marley, we love dem ya know. Jah Bless!
4. Falz – High Class
Falz the Badtguy!Falz the Badtguy! Falz the Badtguy! I had to say that thrice, cause the song for me could have been easily named the number one song drop be an upcoming artiste in 2013. Studio Magic got me dancing from the get-go and the way Falz just easily walk through the beat with lyrics that actually sends message across to the female gender and their strive to be “High Class” makes it a huge fan favourite in 2013. The video for the song is cripsy fresh for me any day. Falz did release another single “Currency” in 2013 but “High Class” is a master piece. This is a song for years, i can never get tired of Falz and the way he will be propelled to Next rated in 2014 will be super fast with that frosh “Butta” fuji flavour in his voice. He will be getting the “Currency” in 2014. With more push and promotions Falz will be a force in the industry.
3. Tekno – Holiday ft. Davido
Tekno the badman is one young chap that brings the nu skool to dancehall – His “Holiday” song which had Davido on the chorus is one of the most played video for an upcoming artist on the TV stations, Radio stations haven’t gotten tired of the slamming it too. GospelOnTheBeat did a very simple feel good beat and when Tekno climbed on the beat he basically made everyday a Holiday, no wonder Iyanya and Ubi Franklin didn’t waste time to sign him up to their Made Men Music Group. The sky is the limit for Tekno in 2014, i can’t wait to hear something new from him this year – The holiday is over Tekno get to work, we waiting! Lmao! Heard he has singles waiting to be released by his new bosses.
2. Wondaboy – Before Then ft. Sarkodie
Wondaboy is indeed a wonder boy! This song got me hooked like i’ve never had an upcoming artiste song do before. Ghanaian producer Sammie Blac made me fall in love with his work, “Before Then” is a master piece people. The beat was so good Sarkodie had to jump on it. Sarkodie who was working on his Sarkology album at that time got to hear Wondaboy’s verse and chorus and left his album to drop his verse on the song. They (Wondaboy and Sarkodie) both met for the first time at the video shoot, which Sarkodie’s clothing company took care of styling them. The video came out cripsy fresh. Wondaboy is currently under managment but getting him on a big record label will do the magic for this young talented Ghana based Nigeria. Wondaboy is the second Nigerian based in Ghana that is on the countdown. He is the total package, young, fine boy, great voice, good writer, whatelse? More push and promotion will get him there.
1. Hulguz Kudlar – Where You Are
Hulguz Kudlar!!! Kudlar is super talented, great voice, excellent writing and composing skills. Kudlar is a Soul/R&B singer, he does pop music too. Praiz and Bez should watch their back. Hulguz Kudlar makes R&B feel so easy. He is a great performer – He only performs with a Live band. Hulguz Kudlar’s “Where You Are” is the only song on the top 5 songs without a video, that shows you how huge the song his. My heart melts everytime i listen to him. At the mention of Hulguz name i feel like showering him with a million dollars! Soul music has never gotten better – Dare Art-Alade, Djinee, Waje, Lira, Black Coffee, Becca and a whole lot of R&B singers would appreciate this master piece. Hulguz Kudlar has all the elements that would make Nigerians fall in love with Soulful R&B music again. So if you’re looking to sign an artiste with a special kind of uniqueness, style, passion and love for what he does – get in contact with Hulguz Kudlar. I can categorically say he is the future of Nigerian R&B with no order from the Oga at the top.
So there you have it the top 20 songs done by upcoming artistes in the year 2013 – This list was compiled so that these talented individuals can get to the next level of their career. Believe me its not easy been an artist not to mention being an upcoming artist, the tag “Upcoming Artiste” is not to insult your personality but to indicate and encourage y’all that although you might feel like you’ve arrived cause of the love you are getting for the single(s) you released in 2013 there is still more work to be done and space above with the Next Rated, A-Rated and A-Plus Rated artiste.
