The return leg will be played in Algiers next month. The Stallions of Burkina Faso on Saturday kept alive their dream of making it to the 2014 Brazil World Cup as they squeezed a 3-2 win over the Desert Foxes of Algeria. The West African side have never qualified for the World Cup and they were gifted an early chance to take the lead at home against Algeria when a penalty kick was awarded against the North Africans. Germany-based Aristide Bance stepped out to take the kick but he flopped the opportunity as he failed to hit the back of the net owing to a superb save from Algerian goalkeeper, Rais Bolhi. Burkina Faso pressed on and finally broke the deadlock through their ace forward, Jonathan Pitroipa, who scored in the stoppage time of the first half. Algeria returned for the second half desperate to restore parity and it did not take too much time before they did so when Sofiane Feghouli scored the equaliser five minutes into the second half. Fifteen minutes later Burkina Faso where back in front; this time, off the boots of Djakaridja Kone. But the lead was again short-lived when the Algerians scored another equaliser four minutes later through Carl Medjani. With time running out on the home team, a ‘contestable’ penalty was awarded to Burkina Faso and it was Bance who stepped out to take the kick and he was this time lucky to convert the 86th minute kick which ensured Burkina Faso won the first leg 3-2. The West African side still has all the work to do in next month’s reverse duel in Algiers.
